Closing the strategy-performance gap

We help business leaders build the optimal growth plan: creating focus across existing brands, categories and activities, exploring new revenue streams that shape the future, and aligning leadership behind a plan the business will actually deliver.

Our approach is built on our own IP, the Stretch Zone and the STRETCH model. Together they diagnose where ambition and commitment have come apart, make the choices about where to play and where not to, and get your business into the Stretch Zone, fast.

Mangrove POV

Performance happens in the Stretch Zone

We're increasingly seeing businesses fail to deliver on their growth goals. Most have a strategy yet 70% of strategies fail to achieve their intended objectives. McKinsey Transformation The gap between strategy and performance is widening.

We believe that the root cause is a mismatch between ambition and commitment. Ambition without commitment becomes unrealistic and quickly results in unmet expectations. Conversely, commitment without ambition can only deliver business as usual and results in missed opportunities.

When the two are aligned, businesses are in the Stretch Zone. Ambition becomes credible, commitment becomes real and performance follows. The Stretch Zone is Mangrove's own IP, born from our Stretchonomics thinking, and it applies at every level:

Businesses

A single stretching ambition that the whole leadership team is committed to delivering.

Portfolios

A clear role for every brand, product, category and channel: where to invest, where to hold and where to stop.

Markets

A market ambition the organisation will genuinely back, with the investment to match.

Brands

A clear strategy for what the brand stands for, where it can grow and how its architecture enables growth.

Why strategy fails

The barriers holding back stretching growth

We see three key themes emerging for why strategy is failing to translate into performance:

1

Lack of strategic purpose

Businesses can become so focused on delivering today's agenda that they lose sight of the bigger question: what are we here to do, and why are we uniquely placed to do it? This can happen at the level of a whole business, a business unit or an individual brand.

Without a clear sense of purpose and role, growth becomes incremental rather than intentional. Opportunities are judged on whether they could be pursued, rather than whether they build towards a meaningful and distinctive future.

2

Strategic ambiguity

For many businesses, the strategy exists but the choices within it are not sharp enough. Ambition can be broad, priorities compete and success means different things to different teams. Without clarity on where to play, how to win and what matters most, strategy struggles to provide the focus it is meant to.

The result is often lots of activity, but not enough direction. When everything feels important, resources get spread too thinly, decisions become inconsistent and teams struggle to translate ambition into meaningful action.

3

The commitment gap

Clarity alone is not enough. Too often, businesses set ambitious strategies without making the choices or commitments required to deliver them. Resource, investment and leadership attention remain tied to the existing business, while new priorities are expected to succeed alongside the day job.

This creates a gap between what the business says it wants to achieve and what it is genuinely prepared to do to achieve it. Without the appetite to make trade-offs, back priorities and stay the course, even a strong strategy will struggle to translate into performance.

Our approach

How we help

Typically we help our clients in:

Creating strategic clarity & focus

Getting clear on the role the business, unit or brand is here to play and where growth will come from. Cutting through competing priorities to make focused choices on where to play, where not to, and aligning leadership around a clear ambition and definition of success.

Turning strategy into committed action

Closing the gap between strategic ambition and what the business is prepared to put behind it. Aligning leadership, resources and priorities around what matters most, and translating those commitments into clear ownership and action.

Why actions always trump words and numbers

Amazon hit their 2030 renewable energy target seven years early. Impressive – or was the target simply too low? And does any of it matter if consumers can’t follow the story? When it comes to sustainability, actions will always speak louder than words and numbers.

Good growth shouldn’t cost the earth

As leading car manufacturers drop entry-level models to hit EV targets, it raises a bigger question for every business: what does good growth actually look like? Profit, margin, unit sales and sustainability goals cannot always all be satisfied at once.

There ain’t no proof like social proof

Three times this week someone has thrust their solar panel app in my face. Annoying? Yes. But it’s also a perfect real-world example of social proof in action – and a timely reminder of the irrational tools marketeers should be using to accelerate behaviour change.

“I feel the need, the need for speed”

This week marks the 10th anniversary of Fashion Revolution. After a decade of campaigning for greater transparency, barely half of the 250 largest fashion brands disclose their primary suppliers. The clock is ticking, consumers are watching, and the industry cannot afford another 10 years of inaction.

Beware the silos

The world of sustainability is blurry, connected and complex – but most companies tackling it are not. Nick Pye examines why rigid silo structures are the enemy of effective sustainability strategy, and why connecting the dots between E and S is where the real opportunity lies.
